As I watched the reports of the mass killings at Virginia Tech, it is hard to figure out why someone would want to bring harm to others. We can ask why God allowed this to happen, what else could have been done to prevent this horrible incident from taking place and may other questions that have swirled in our heads these last few days. While it will be many years before Robbie will hit a college campus, it makes me wonder what kind of world he will live in later on in his life. We look back at other violent events that have taken place in our country on school campuses, like Columbine and Virginia Tech, there is something that we can take away from these events. What if someone would have befriended those kids at these 2 schools? Would they have committed these acts of violence? Maybe. Maybe not.
As Christians, we are commanded to love one another. Love is a verb (which is an action word) and if we share the love of God to everyone, no matter what their skin color is, ethnic background, education, social status or whatever else you may use to label a person or group of people, the chances of events like Virginia Tech, September 11th, or others may decrease.
Some may say it is too simple. That is true. But as we watch news events from all over the world, there are a few lessons we need to put into practice. Love one another and share the hope we have in Christ (if you are someone who has given Jesus Christ complete control of your life as your Savior).
I believe that if we can do these things each day, it will make an impact on the lives you come in contact with in whatever circumstance.
Finally, I would encourage you to pray for the families that lost loved ones, the student body of Virginia Tech, professors, staff, administration and the community of Blacksburg. This is a tragic event, but God has promised in His Word that He will use it for good. Also, we might consider to pray for the area churches around Blacksburg as they have an awesome opportunity to share with this community the healing power of Christ!
